BASIC CAPTIVE CARE OF THE GREEN IGUANA
Common Name: Common Green Iguana
Scientific Name: Iguana iguana
Distribution: South America
Size: 4' - 5'
NATURAL HABITAT:
The green iguana is a arboreal lizard which inhabitant the
tropical rain forests of south america.
In captivity adult iguana's require a vivarium of at least
6' x 5' x 4'. Please give more space if possible.
BEHAVIOR:
Most will become tame with regular handling.
Males do become territorial, and should be kept separate
from other males.
CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT:
Use full spectrum 5% UVB lighting 12-14 hours per day.
Provide a basking area with access to a cooler area.
Supply several basking areas of branches and logs.
Provide hiding places (cork bark) for cover.
Substrate Orchid bark is very good.
TEMPERATURE:
Daytime temperature should be:
basking area 90 degrees F.
cool area 80 degrees F.
Night temperatures should range between 70-80 degrees F.
Use a reptile heat mat for 24-hour ground heat inside
the vivarium.
HUMIDITY:
Iguana's requires moderate to high levels of humidity.
Mist the vivarium every other day.
WATER REQUIREMENTS:
Supply a large fairly deep water dish for drinking and bathing.
NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Green Iguana's are herbivores. They Like dark greens mustard, turnip,
dandelions (leaves & flowers). Feed beets, cabbage, spinach, (broccoli and
kale small amounts only). Supplement leafy diet with green beans, squash, sprouts,
and runner beans). 10-15% of diet may include fruits (papayas, orange, mangos,
apples, figs, etc).
